If you would enjoy being transported to India, open this book:

To earn more money, we worked in people’s houses, washing their dishes….
I had never gone to school…Everyday was the same, as it had been from the time I was a small girl.
Then one day, when I was passing the village pond, a strange thing happened. As I stood and looked, the scene turned into a picture in my mind. It came alive, bright and lively, telling stories. I was happy the whole day, thinking of my picture.

FOLLOWING MY PAINT BRUSH is the story of Dulari Devi, a domestic helper who became an artist in the Mithila style of folk painting from Bihar, eastern India.. Her childhood was doomed to be a life of unchanging hard work and no education – not one day of school.  Dulari refused to be discouraged.  While washing dishes in an artist’s house, she discovered her passion – painting.

Dulari learned by observing, by trying, making mistakes, trying again.  Following My Paint Brush tells in pictures and words the true story of a young girl who saw stories in the images around her – the fish in the market, the ice-cream man with his cart, the naughty boy smoking in a tree – and she would not quit until she could re-create the images with her paint brush. This is Dulari’s first book.

Dulari Devi is an artist who paints in the Mithila style of folk painting from eastern India. This is her first book. The text was re-told by Gita Wolf based on Dulari Devi’s oral narratives.
