This inspiring appeal came to me via the Rutgers library school listserve:
Hello, I am Adelah Sohail, a freshman from Afghanistan.
I am a Rutgers student and I live in Douglass Residential College. I have a request from all of you. I hope you can help.
YOUNG WOMEN FOR CHANGE, in conjunction with INTELLECTUAL YOUTHS, is holding a book drive from now until November 1st! Kindly send us your books, DVDs, and other educational media for the women and youths of Afghanistan to use!
YOUNG WOMEN FOR CHANGE (YWC) is one of the premier Afghan women’s advocacy movements founded by Afghan women, for Afghan women. In addition to uniting Afghan women in Afghanistan and the US to fight for women’s rights in our country, we also held the very first anti-street harassment march in Afghan history, and will be conducting the first ever large-scale study of sexual harassment in Afghanistan soon. Additionally, we work towards women’s empowerment and increasing access to education. As part of this, we require books and documentaries! Your donation will make an enormous difference in the lives of Afghan women!
WHO WE ARE:
INTELLECTUAL YOUTHS, formed in 2010 to serve the people of Helmand, is dedicated to increasing access to education for youths in one of the most underserved regions of Afghanistan. We are initiating to establish a public library in Lashkargah City in Helmand, which will serve the underprivileged youth of our area. Filling this library with books and resources will not only give these youths access to educational opportunities they didn’t have before, but will go a long way in establishing peace in our region.
WHAT TO SEND:
That documentary about the Civil Rights movement that you have laying around? Send it!
That old textbook that you won’t really use again? Send it!
That Jane Austen classic, or Hegel essay, or any classic work that’s sitting on your bookshelf? Send it!
These books WILL be read and used many, many times by Afghan women and youths for years to come. Your contribution will make a huge difference in improving education and promoting peace.
All we ask is that the material you send us:
1. Is not sexually explicit, vulgar, or pornographic
2. Is something educational you are passionate about sharing with others!
So get those poetry books, philosophy tomes, literary classics, textbooks, documentaries, and any other educational material you want to share with Afghan women and youths, and send them to:

The women and youth of Afghanistan will be grateful to you. Your donations are highly appreciated!
Thank you for your help in advance.
