A family has a special tree in their backyard, an apple pie tree!

Two siblings share what they love most about their backyard apple tree and how the way it changes season to season. In winter, the tree is brown and empty, almost lonesome. In time the warm weather returns and with it comes changes: tiny leaves sprout on the brown branches. Soon, two robins arrive and build a nest. As the year progresses from season to season, the children notice how both the tree and the robins change, too. When at last it is autumn, the birds have flown away. The ripe apples are ready to be picked and made into apple pie.

Hall and Halpern’s delightful book is a great vehicle for primary teachers to introduce the changes that happen from season to season. The back matter includes science facts on the importance of bees as well as a recipe for apple pie. Highly recommended for any family, school, or public library.
