A Most Beautiful Gift – Give Someone a Book this holiday season

Give a book to a child, to a library, school or public. Put one in a Little Free Library! Take time to read with a child. Or an elder. Laugh together. Find hidden pictures together. Anticipate what will happen with the next page turn.

One of my personal favorites – a book for any age to enjoy – is BEAUTIFUL HANDS – BY KATHRYN OTOSHI AND BRET BAUMGARTEN. The “jump off the page” images were created by Kathryn Otoshi, who is the owner and creator of Blue Dot Press, an imprint of KO Kids Books. Perhaps you know her first book, ONE (and then came ZERO ) Blue is a dot, a quiet color. Red is a bully who likes to pick on Blue. None of the other colors speak up. One comes along and encourages the many different colors to stand together and count.

Kathryn Otoshi’s one-woman publishing house, Blue Dot Press, creates fun, engaging books that show how we all can accept each other’s differences and how it sometimes just takes one voice to make everyone count. Her newest book, BEAUTIFUL HANDS, shows us all the wonderful things our hands can do when we put thought into action – colorful, creative, beautiful action.

For “good book” ideas, take a look at these books listed by the New York Public Library that invite connection and compassion:  (disclaimer, my newest book is on the list, a book that celebrates babies, families and laughter)

Buy a book. Share it. Enjoy it. Give it away.

“My hope is that this book empowers creativity, to you and yours, in the fulfilling and remarkable way it has for me.” co-author Bret Baumgarten, 2014
