Luca’s Bridge / El puente de Luca

DEPORTATION

Families must decide.  Stay and separate.  or  Leave the United States, the country that once was the land of “friendship and freedom,” the country that has been their home.

Today. Many families-  hundreds of families – are making this decision.  Here is one beautiful picture book to share with children that expresses both the sadness, the fears, and also the hope when a family is deported.

Luca has never been to Mexico.  His home in the United States has been a safe and happy place; his school and his friends are what he has known — and his music.  Now he must leave.

“Luca struggles through lonely and disorienting times–reflected both in Real’s delicate, symbolic illustrations and through Llanos’ description of Luca’s dreams–and leans on music, memory, and familial love for support.”

Share this beautiful book with your young readers and listeners.  Talk with them about what is happening in every community.  Listen to their questions, their responses.  Answers are not needed.  Awareness and compassion is a gift.  Silence is not protection.

From the publisher, Penny Candy Books:  Luca’s Bridge, El Puente de Luca is “a powerful meditation on home and identity … and “…raises awareness of the impacts that deportation has on families and children and fosters an understanding of and empathy for immigrants in the United States.”
