Lucia the Luchadora Girl Power!

A review by our guest contributor, Rachel Funez —

Lucia the Luchadora, by Cynthia Leonor Garza, is a delightful story about a little girl whose dreams of being a superhero are dashed when the boys on the playground tell her girls can’t do that. But then her Abuela shows her a special secret: Lucia comes from a family of luchadoras, the brave women of the Mexican lucha libre tradition. In the sequel, Lucia the Luchadora and the Million Masks, Lucia has to learn to include her little sister in the luchadora fun.

These books are full of humor and heart. Lucia is spunky, full of energy, and has big dreams and a huge heart. I love the relationships between Lucia and her Abu and little sister – very realistic and sweet. I love the cultural elements of these stories and the bits of Spanish sprinkled in. I love the fun and colorful illustrations. And best of all (of course) I love the girl power theme! Wrapped in a fun superhero narrative, this story shows readers that girls aren’t just “sugar and spice and everything nice.” Girls can be “spicy mad,” “KA-POW! kind of mad!”

Girls can be super heroes. And when they stand up for what’s right, they can be every-day heroes, too.”
