An American Writer and an Iranian Illustrator Honor a Child from Mauritania

deep-in-the-saharaMaine writer Kelly Cunnane’s picture books are love songs to the people of Kenya and Mauritania, both countries where she has lived and worked.  FOR YOU ARE A KENYAN CHILD (illus. by Ana Juan) follows a village boy herding his family’s cows and  CHIRCHIR IS SINGING (illus. by Jude Daly)  follows Chirchir’s heart’s desire to be helpful to members of her family with unfortunate consequences until she brings pleasure to them all Sahara Lallla and her motherwith her  singing.

Cunnane’s newest book, DEEP IN THE SAHARA, is set in the  Muslim West African country of Mauritania. As with all her books DEEP IN THE SAHARA offers readers a taste of the country’s language and names of fruits and animals that are part of the life of the country.  What stands out stunningly in the book are the vibrant illustrations by Iranian artist Hoda Hadadi.  Hadadi is a creator of many books known in Iran and she has won international awards.  Her art is lush, the colors stunning as they depict Lalla’s desire, to wear the malafa – the head cover –   worn by her mother and other women in her village.  One illustration was terribly tender, a double spread in which Lalla’s mother pauses in her work,  looks at her daughter, and hears her desire to wear the malafa.  The scene is bordered by vibrant fabric in stark contrast to the desert life of Lalla and her family.   Hadadi describes her passion for creating books and her process of creating the form of illustration she most loves, collage, in this video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1QARoq73fs

DEEP IN THE SAHARA is the illustrator’s first book to be published in the United States. I hope many more of Hadadi’s creations can come to readers across the world.
