Some Writer, The Story of E. B. White

By Mellissa Sweet

On July 11, 1899, Elwyn Brooks White was born in New York City. He grew to love not only words but also turning them into stories typed on his typewriter. Equally important to White was the natural world around him. As a young man he and a friend from Cornell University, “Cush” Cushman, surprised their families with their decision to hit the roads and travel West. This was in 1922, when many roads were nothing more than dirt paths. Undaunted, the friends set off on the adventure in White’s Model T Ford. Eventually, White returned to New York and was hired as a writer at a new magazine, The New Yorker. Andy and Katharine Sergeant Angell were married in 1929. In 1933 they moved to Maine to live and work and raise their son, but later returned to New York City in 1943. In 1945, White’s first children’s book, STUART LITTLE was published, followed by CHARLOTTE’S WEB in 1952, and THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN in 1970. White’s simple but genuine way with words and seeing wonders in the world around him has endeared his works to readers around the world.

Caldecott Honor Winner author and illustrator, Sweet researched E.B. White’s life thoroughly to gain the necessary insights to recreate his biography retold through simple text and with detailed collages. A treat to peruse, this would be a wonderful addition to any home, school, or public library.
