Cheetahs are the fastest land animal, capable of running up to seventy miles per hour(113 km.). Though very impressive, running this fast is also extremely tiring, so cheetahs must rest frequently.

At one time cheetahs roamed in almost all parts of Africa, but no longer. Their populations are endangered and may very well become extinct in the not so distant future.

Cheetahs most often have only three to five cubs per litter and the mother must leave the babies alone while she hunts. Potentially, this puts the cubs in danger from various predators so the mother moves the dens every few days as another type of protection. The good news is that the cubs are able to follow her on her hunts by the time they are only two months old!

Another major problem facing cheetahs is losing their territory to farmers. Living in this way means they live in fragmented territories. It makes it harder for cheetahs to find potential mates and proximity to humans is often dangerous to the cheetahs.

Stanek’s lyrical prose is balanced with facts about them on opposing pages and in the detailed back matter. Bersani’s expressive illustrations make the text come alive and are a visual treat. Highly recommended for any home, school, or public library.
