Bat Citizens: Defending the Ninjas of the Night by Rob Laidlaw

As a fan of bats myself, I’m always happy to see a book that not only educates young people about them and tries to protect and preserve them. And their protectors are kids from around the world, called “Bat Citizens.” Animal rights activist Rob Laidlaw has produced an eye-pleasing layout, with pages nicely balancing photos and text boxes, replete with a humorous and conversational tone throughout.

In these days of Common Core, elementary teachers could easily adopt this inspiring book as a science text. It has a thorough index and the book is packed with information (and corrections of misinformation). How many textbooks might actually inspire activism in its readers like this one?

Bat Citizens: Defending the Ninjas of the Night (48 pages) is published by Pajama Press.
