MARTIN & ANNE
The Kindred Spirits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank

By Nancy Churnin, Illustrated by Yevgenia Nayberg
Creston Books 2019

This wholly admirable picture book couples lofty principles with distressing events in simple yet powerful terms.

“In 1929, two babies were born on opposite sides of the ocean. They never met. They didn’t even speak the same language. But their hearts beat with the same hope.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. was troubled as a boy by racial discrimination.

“When Martin was 13, he won a speech competition, talking about black and white children playing together in harmony.”

As an adult, King promoted civil disobedience in his quest for justice despite danger to himself.

Anne Frank, hiding in an attic with her family to escape Nazi persecution of Amsterdam’s Jews, writes in her diary of her joys.

“Trapped in the attic, Anne described how beautiful the world outside was, how light could brighten the deepest darkness.”

Anne’s faith in people persists despite her desperately trying circumstances.

Churnin offers the young reader examples of humanity at its finest. Nayberg’s gentle, loving illustrations add to the celebration of these two enduring spirits.
An important book for our and all times.
