The Pirate Tree is a collective of children’s and young adult writers interested in children’s literature and social justice issues. Regular editors and writers are listed below. We welcome guest writers. We do review books but only consider books that come to us through recommendations. WHO WE ARE

Nancy Bo Flood
Nancy Bo Flood is the author of many books for children, most recently Warriors in the Crossfire, a young adult novel that explores one boy’s experiences with impending war on the Pacific island of Saipan. Throughout her life Bo Flood has enjoyed reading, writing, and the sharing of stories. Her work has focused primarily on children and young adults, as counselor, teacher, or parent. She has conducted workshops of child abuse, learning disabilities, play therapy, as well as creative writing. Through either work or research, Bo has lived in Malawi, Africa, Hawaii, Japan, the western Pacific, and, most recently, the Navajo Nation Reservation.

Lyn Miller-Lachmann
Lyn Miller-Lachmann is the author of several multicultural books, including the novels Gringolandia, a 2010 ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and Rogue. Her companion to Gringolandia, Surviving Santiago, will be published in 2015. She is a seventh grade teacher in a Reform Jewish religious school and the assistant host of “Vientos del Pueblo,” a bilingual radio show on WRPI-FM in Albany, New York, featuring Latin American and Spanish music, poetry, and history.

Sarah Marwill Lamstein

Sarah Marwil Lamstein, former teacher, librarian, and puppeteer, is the author of four picture books, a middle grade novel, co-author of a Nepali folktale collection, and a poetry chapbook.  Her picture books include Big Night for Salamanders, a Smithsonian Notable Book; Letter on the Wind/A Chanukah Tale, Sydney Taylor Honor Award; I Like Your Buttons! a Bank Street College of Education Best Book for Children; Annie’s Shabbat, a Booklist Top Ten Religion Book for Youth.  Her middle grade novel Hunger Moon, set in the 1950’s, shows sixth grade Ruthie struggling to make her way in a dysfunctional family, which includes a brother beset with Aspergers at a time when there was little awareness of the disorder.  On the making of her Nepali folktale collection, From the Mango Tree, she collaborated with Nepali writer Kavita Ram Shrestha.  Her poetry chapbook, Breathless, was published by Finishing Line Press.  To learn more about Sarah and her books, visit www.sarahlamstein.com

J.L. Powers
J.L. Powers is the author of The Confessional, a novel for young adults that explores racial tension and violence on the U.S.-Mexico Border, and the author of This Thing Called the Future , a coming-of-age novel set in South Africa. She is the editor of Labor Pains and Birth Stories: Essays on Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Becoming a Parent  and the editor of a forthcoming anthology exploring all aspects of children and war.
